The Role of Family in Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation
When someone enters alcohol and drug rehabilitation it is essential that they have a strong support system around them. Standing on their own, they are usually not strong enough emotionally to go through detox and all of the emotional trials that come with the long journey to recovery. Yet, in many cases family ties have been so strained that the bonds need to be recreated, and trust once again built up, in order to secure the strong support system that is needed.
The Role of Loved Ones
For someone in alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs or even just in a program for alcohol rehabilitation, family members and friends who love the person, play an integral part in keeping them on the drug free, and or sober path for months and years to come.
There are always going to be weak moments, where a recovering addict, wants to return to their addiction, and in those moments it is the person’s loved ones who will gather around them and make sure they keep going, without falling back into the addiction. Without this type of interaction and support, many addicts will in fact have relapses that could be life threatening.
Strained Relationships
The biggest complication for some people who enter alcohol and drug rehabilitation is convincing family members that the person is really seeking legitimate help and will be getting their life back on track. Family members may have stood by the addict several times in the past, only to find themselves burned and abused, while the addict gave back in to the addiction.
Some family members and loved ones have been stolen from, lied to, and mentally or physically abused by the addict, so they are not as willing to become active participants in the person’s recovery. They simply fear that the negative behaviors will continue and they will be placing themselves in danger once again.
Just as recovery is extremely hard for the recovering addict, it is very painful and difficult for family members as well.
The Road to Family Recovery
It’s no wonder there are support groups available now for the children and family members of drug addicts and alcoholics! The family members go through just as much pain and torment as the addict, and they suffer serious mental and physical consequences even after the addict pulls their life back together, and gets away from the addiction.
Often, alcohol and drug treatment will not be complete without counseling of the entire family. If the family and surrounding close friends can pull together and move beyond their issues and previous betrayals, everyone involved has a much better chance of moving on to a fulfilling, successful life.
Someone going through alcohol and drug rehabilitation simply cannot have a fighting chance at long term freedom from drugs, and sobriety, without being surrounded by a very strong support system. They need people around them to talk through their problems and help them out when their addiction seems easier than daily life without the addiction.
If the family unit cannot pull together and bond around the recovering addict, then close friends or even church members should be sought out to create the support that is needed. If bonds need to be repaired and trust restored before certain loved ones can become active and willing participants in the recovery process then that should begin as quickly as possible in order to secure the best support system for the recovering addict.
