Drug Abuse

Drug Abuse is an ongoing and large social concern in the U.S. today. Drug Abuse is a broad term used for the misuse of many types of drugs such as Alcohol, Cocaine, Heroin, Amphetamine’s, Cannabis, LSD, GHB, and many more.  Drug and Alcohol Abuse affects most communities and countless families everyday in some way.  Around 40 million serious injuries or illnesses are directly related to the misuse of drugs and alcohol every year here in the U.S.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse becomes obvious when a person develops a physical dependence on a specific drug, and then persists in consuming the drug despite problems and issues that have began.  These issues or concerns can be varied across one or many areas of life.   People who abuse drugs come from numerous social standings and across a broad spectrum of cultures.  They abuse drugs for a variety of different reasons and unfortunately many abusers become addicted.

Substance Abuse affects a person on a social scale immensely.  While under the influence, a person is more likely to be involved in a car accident, overdose, or be the victim of a violent act.  A person addicted to drugs does not have the clarity of thought or good judgment that is necessary to make the right decisions in everyday life. Often, once addicted, a person neglects their physical wellbeing and is willing to sacrifice things like food and clothing, so that they can afford their next “hit” or “drink”.  Their addictions can become very disruptive – sometimes leading to the loss of a job and even homelessness. Unfortunately, the addicted person can also neglect their relationships with family and friends resulting in conflict and hurt. It is also sad when the parent/s of young children become addicted, because often these children miss out on vital developmental needs e.g. clothes and food, and a loving stable home.

Drug Abuse can also lead to severe withdrawals, where a person may become irritable, stressed, depressed or violent. Because their ability to think rationally is impaired, they sometimes resort to desperate acts in order to get the money to support their addiction. For example, some people may resort to prostitution or theft to obtain enough money to feed their powerful cravings. Crimes like these obviously have serious implications such as the transmission of STD’s or the simple fact that the addicted person may end up in jail for their crimes.

Drug Abuse puts serious emotional, financial, physical and physiological stress and strain on both the addicted person and their close friends and families. Unfortunately many people cannot see that they have a drug abuse problem and approaching a loved one with your concerns may be difficult.
