Alcohol and Drug Treatment

Alcohol and Drug Treatment Options – What’s Right for You?

By the time you come to a point where you break down and admit that you need some type of alcohol and drug treatment you don’t have a lot of time for weighing your options. You are at the breaking point where you could seriously injure yourself or change your mind and slip back into your addiction if you aren’t able to get treatment immediately.

Following is a quick overview of the types of alcohol and drug treatment centers which are currently in operation around the country. Consider the benefits of each and then consult online directories for your state which will help you locate the best resources in your area.

Detox Programs
There are some programs that are designed simply to help you detox your body from the drugs or alcohol. They are not designed to give extensive counseling or help you completely heal from your addiction, but rather are safe places where you can get past the physical withdrawal symptoms with some type of medical supervision.

Detoxing with medical supervision is very important when withdrawing from some drugs or if you have been an addict or alcoholic for a very long length of time. If you have trouble finding an open spot in an affordable detox program near you, contact the local hospital to see if they allow detox patients to come there.

Private Rehabilitation Centers
This is the standard rehab facility that most people bring to mind when they think of a drug addict seeking help. You will have a semi-private room and access to comfortable surroundings and competent medical supervision as well as some type of counseling (group and individual in most cases) to help with the mental aspects of alcohol and drug treatment.
The big drawback to a private rehab facility is the cost. You should check with your health insurance carrier to determine how much of your treatment will be covered and what you will be expected to pay out of pocket.

Halfway Houses
If you need extended alcohol and drug treatment, consider living in a halfway house prior to returning to your regular life. These homes are designed to equip you to live in the real world without falling back into your addiction and give you constant communication with others who are going through their own journeys to an addiction-free life.
Halfway houses are becoming extremely popular and more and more of them are opening around the country.

Low Cost Outpatient Programs
In some cases effective drug and alcohol treatment can be found through outpatient services. These services rest heavily on counseling and may include group meetings and buddy systems where recovering addicts support or sponsor one another.
If you are trying to get off of a serious drug which could have serious health consequences during detox, make sure you go to a detox program or hospital while initially coming off of the drug.
In order for outpatient programs to be effective you need to have a very strong support system helping you all the way through.

Specialty Centers
There are some rehab centers which cater to people with specific religious beliefs or to categories of people according to gender, age, or specific types of drug and alcohol abuse. These programs may not be available in all states but could give you more specialized care if you find one with an open bed.
